The Batman Cartoon - Behind The Scenes - Exclusive Style Guide | Legions of Gotham

The Batman Cartoon Fansite - The Batman Matsuda 2004-2009
Behind the Scenes of The Batman Cartoon - The Batman Production Art

Legions of Gotham had the exclusive world premiere look at the style guide sheets that were used in the production for the cartoon The Batman. These were given to the artists and animators on the series as a reference tool. We premiered these back in 2008.

The guide centers largely around Jeff Matsuda's desire to give Batman's cape a very specific life in the cartoon. The Batman style guides detail exactly how Batman's cape should be draw and draped in various scenarios.

"I've said it before and I'll say it again - your site is amazing! I check out your forums every chance I get to read what fans think of our shows. You're doing a hell of a job for the Batman fans!"

Okay, so if you're familiar with Josh Gad at all you know he's a little bit of a nerd. No, wait he's a HUGE nerd and a major Batman fan to boot. We mean that as a complete compliment, of course. Gad has been rumored to be swarming around the role of Penguin for awhile now, but his latest Tweet directed at Hamm made us geek out.

ThrowBat Thursday: The 1989 Toy Biz Batman Toys!

Throwback Thursday Batman ThrowBat Thursday

Welcome to the Legions of Gotham ThrowBat Thursday spotlight on the 1989 Toy Biz Batman toyline. It feels like yesterday for some of us old-timers, but 1989 was nearly 30 years ago now. When the Tim Burton helmed Batman film hit theaters, it helped to change the look, feel and reception of Batman in the public eye forever.

The initial toy offerings came from Toy Biz. I can remember seeing the initial images for the toyline, which were basically re-painted Kenner Super Powers figures! The promotional images needed to be solicited for Toy Fair before the tooling was ready, so they made do.

The toyline would be short lived, as the license passed back to Kenner by 1991, but the original Toy Biz line was an absolute blast. There were many variants and nuances to the figures released, which we've detailed below. Here is a fun walk down memory lane and a checklist for the 1989 Toy Biz Batman line.

There were FOUR face variants to the Batman action figure. They are each seen here.

Affleck Reportedy Out as Batman - Jon Hamm Wants In!

The rumor mill has been buzzing today after a confusing report that came out on the Hollywood Reporter website that Henry Cavill was out as Supes. His agent and WB themselves later attempted to qualify what seemed to be more of a hiatus from the cape...although if what everyone is saying is true, it won't much matter with Superman being put on the back burner for the time being.

Now, more reports about Ben Affleck, the long rumored departure from the Dark Knight role that he was so eager to play. A writer with Forbes took to Twitter, exclaiming to fans that Affleck indeed will not be Batman in the upcoming Matt Reeves helmed 'The Batman' movie.

“He's not Batman in this movie. As of now, there are no plans to involve Affleck, and the situation behind the scenes is that he's been arranging his exit from the DCEU for months...I know fans hate to hear this, but it's time to prepare yourselves for Batman without Affleck,”

In related news, Mad Men actor Jon Hamm has thrown his hat in the ring, stating that he would like to be involved if the script was right. The interview was in the Hollywood Reporter:

"It depends on the script, what the story is. I am a huge comic book fan, always have been. I have read comic books since I was nine or younger. And I am pretty knowledgeable about a lot of them. And I like the genre, and I like when they are done well."

LOG Opinion Time: It's been an exhausting day, lol. Hamm certainly has the chin and the classic looks for the role. We'll see how it shakes out, but hopefully WB does recognize what Marvel is doing that they aren't.

The DC Extended Universe will have the following films releasing soon:

  • Aquaman (2018) release date: Dec 21, 2018
  • Shazam! (2019) release date: Apr 05, 2019
  • Joker (2019) release date: Oct 04, 2019

UPDATE: Henry Cavill May Still Be Superman Moving Forward

Earlier this morning a report surfaced that said Cavill was done being Big Blue for the DCEU, due to some scheduling conflicts. Now, Cavill's agent, Dany Garcia, has Tweeted clarification. According to Garcia, Cavill is simply taking a break from the role for awhile:

We will have to wait and see what the official Warner Bros. statement says later today. LoG will update with that information when it's available, so stay tuned!

The DC Extended Universe will have the following films releasing soon:
  • Aquaman (2018) release date: Dec 21, 2018
  • Shazam! (2019) release date: Apr 05, 2019

Breaking News: Henry Cavill is NO LONGER the DCEU Superman!

Henry Cavill is no longer Superman!

In a shocking development, the Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Henry Cavill is no longer the Man of Steel. The role of Superman is now up for grabs moving forward, after negotiations for a cameo in the upcoming Shazam film broke down thanks to a scheduling conflict. Cavill is moving to Netflix to helm a series called The Witcher.

RELATED: Will Game of Thrones Star Kit Harrington Be The New Batman?

This, along with the news that Ben Affleck may be done with the Batman role, is leaving a clean slate for two of the big three DC Universe roles moving forward, which may prove to be an exciting change in the box office competition with Marvel.

LOG Opinion Time: Personally, I'm happy about this. I wasn't a fan of Man of Steel or Snyder's take on the Dc Universe, whatsoever. I felt that Cavill, while embodying the character physically, was too grim and dark for Superman. He needs to be more of a symbol of hope to contrast the despair of Batman.

The DC Extended Universe will have the following films releasing soon:
  • Aquaman (2018) release date: Dec 21, 2018
  • Shazam! (2019) release date: Apr 05, 2019

Gotham's Final Season May Include Bane - Casting Details!

Gotham TV Show Bane

Gotham has been a huge hit for the last few years and, although devisive amongst the fans, it remains it's own unique take on the Batman universe. It could almost be called an "Elseworlds" version of Gotham City. The fourth season recently released on blu-ray and season five rumors are heating-up!

Related: Gotham: The Complete Fourth Season - The latest season of the hit FOX drama arrives on BD 8/21!

The show is featuring their own take on the legendary No Man's Land comic book story arc during the fifth and final season of the series. The latest casting news is that Shane West is being brought in as Eduardo Dorrance, an old Army buddy of Jim Gordon. There aren't any further details about this casting, but eagle-eyed fans will note that the name of the character closely resembles the real name of the character King Snake, Sir Edmund Dorrance. King Snake is, of course, Bane's father in the comic books.

It remains to be seen how Gotham will handle the Bane situation, but one thing is for sure...it will be unique.

Gotham airs on the Fox Network

Joaquin Phoenix Is Physically Transforming Into The Joker

The anticipation continues to grow for the Joaquin Phoenix helmed Joker solo film, which releases next year. Phoenix, known for being a superior method actor, has been physically transforming himself for the role. The above is fan art to give an idea of how he could look, but the pictures that are surfacing of Phoenix tell the story all by themselves!

LOG Opinion Time: You know, I actually enjoyed the Suicide Squad movie...except for the Joker bits. I was not a fan of the Jared Leto version of the Clown Prince of Crime, so it's great to see a new take already. The fact that Todd Phillips, of Hangover fame, is writing and directing this movie makes me raise an eyebrow, but I remain hopeful.

The DC Extended Universe will have the following films releasing soon:

Will Game of Thrones Star Kit Harrington Be The New Batman?

Game of Thrones star Kit Harrington Eyed for Batman Movie Role

The rumor mill is buzzing again today with the casting of the hottest hero in comics still up in the air. The role of the Dark Knight in the upcoming WB feature, 'The Batman' is on everyone's lips. The latest name being thrown out there is Kit Harrington, known by fans of HBO's 'Game of Thrones' as Jon Snow. The soulful, puppy dog eyed actor is apparently being considered by Warner Brothers for the role in the Matt Reeves helmed film.

Harrington went on record back in 2015 stating that he would love to play Batman, but he thinks that superhero films are too dark and serious.

LoG Opinion time: Batman is too dark and serious for you Jon Snow? Well, then it's a good thing that you're the face of the romantic comedy, 'Game of Thrones'.

'The Batman' is the highly anticipated Batman solo film directed by Matt Reeves. The release date for the film is forthcoming. The DC Extended Universe will have the following films releasing soon:

  • Aquaman (2018) release date: Dec 21, 2018
  • Shazam! (2019) release date: Apr 05, 2019
