Crude DVD Review

Crude DVD Review

Synopsis: Three years in the making, this cinéma-vérité feature from acclaimed filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Brother's Keeper, Paradise Lost, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster) is the epic story of one of the largest and most controversial legal cases on the planet. An inside look at the infamous $27 billion "Amazon Chernobyl" case, Crude is a real-life high stakes legal drama set against a backdrop of the environmental movement, global politics, celebrity activism, human rights advocacy, the media, multinational corporate power, and rapidly-disappearing indigenous cultures. Presenting a complex situation from multiple viewpoints, the film subverts the conventions of advocacy filmmaking as it examines a complicated situation from all angles while bringing an important story of environmental peril and human suffering into focus.

Review: Here at DVD Legion we love documentaries.  This feature is a great look at the greed and corruption that exists in our world at the corporate level.  It most certainly gave me a rather intense dislike for Chevron!  Crude made a splash at the Sundance film festival, which always makes us stand up and notice.

This film looks deeply into the infamous 'Amazon Chernobyl' case and gives you a look at the real-life drama involved in trying to preserve our environment against the corporations.  What a fantastic film from Joe Berlinger.  He did a fantastic job of hitting this info from so many different angles.  It all comes together in a compelling and intriguing look at a situation that most people have probably never even heard of.

If you're looking for a great true story of modern struggle and corruption, Crude is for you.  Its a little depressing, just because of the sheer nature of the controversy, but its definately a good watch.

The South Park Episode Guide, Volume 1 Seasons 1-5 Book Review

The South Park Episode Guide, Volume 1 Seasons 1-5 Book Review

About the Book: Since its debut in 1997, South Park has been one of the best loved, most watched, and intensely controversial shows on television. The animated series about four 4th graders—Cartman, Stan, Kyle, and Kenny—has perennially been a critical triumph and a regular ratings monster. And it boasts an enormous legion of diehard fans who would kill (Kenny) to get their hands on this book.

Inside you’ll find entertaining, informative, and colorful descriptions of each episode of South Park from Season 1 through 5. Each episode is presented on a full-color spread featuring detailed plot descriptions, character sketches, celebrity-guest rundowns, dead-body counts, pointless observations, insider information, unexpected trivia, memorable quotes, colorful screen grabs, and much more.

Our Take: We love South Park here at the Legion.  The show has been on the air and causing mischief since 1997, and still going strong.  Anyone that has seen it knows that no celebrity or social subject matter is off limits.  They do a great job of not taking sides, but mocking all extremes on every issue.

When I first heard about these episode guides, I wasn't quite sure what the point was.  I mean, you can look up any episode guide on the net, right?  Well, not like this one you can't.  This isn't just some episode guide...this is an all-out, in-depth look at the first five seasons of the show.

Each episode is given two pages of summaries, trivia, behind the scenes tidbits and graphics.  For example....one of my personal favorite episodes "Gnomes".  It aired during season two as the 17th episode.  The book tells us the body count for the episode, pop culture references, memorable quotes, pointless observations, character debuts and several paragraphs about the actual story.  In this episode it tells us as a pointless observation that "The band Toto performs at a Prop 10 rally.  A costumed character named Camel Joe, used by Harbucks to drum up business with kids, is a thinly veiled reference to Joe Camel.  This is the first time that Token is actually referred to as "Token".  Up to this point, he has just been a background character.  The logline for Tweek Bros. Coffee is "30 Years of Tweekers."

The book is so very in-depth and a perfect gift for any fan.  Its a good birthday gift or a nice thing to just pick up for yourself.

The Lovely Bones Book Review

The Lovely Bones Book Review

About the Book: Once in a generation a novel comes along that taps a vein of universal human experience, resonating with readers of all ages. THE LOVELY BONES is such a book -- a #1 bestseller celebrated at once for its artistry, for its luminous clarity of emotion, and for its astonishing power to lay claim to the hearts of millions of readers around the world.

"My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973."

So begins the story of Susie Salmon, who is adjusting to her new home in heaven, a place that is not at all what she expected, even as she is watching life on earth continue without her -- her friends trading rumors about her disappearance, her killer trying to cover his tracks, her grief-stricken family unraveling. Out of unspeakable tragedy and loss, THE LOVELY BONES succeeds, miraculously, in building a tale filled with hope, humor, suspense, even joy.

The major motion picture version of THE LOVELY BONES, directed by Peter Jackson and starring Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, and Saoirse Ronan is scheduled for release on December 11, 2009.

Our Take: I know that this is a book that I should've read many years ago.  My wife read it long ago and we discussed it, but I had forgotten about the Lovely Bones, until I heard about the recent movie being made.   I don't know why I avoided it, I guess the subject matter was a bit heavy.   Reading about the death of a child, especially in a brutal fashion, isn't my idea of fun.  That being said, I do think that this book serves a greater purpose, especially to those that have experienced loss.

This book is about connections more than anything.  The victim, a young teen girl named Susie Salmon, is murdered by her neighbor Mr. Harvey in the beginning of the book.  From that point on she becomes a fly on the wall, watching her loved ones deal with her death in the coming years.  She has to watch her family struggle and fall apart emotionally, all the while she is longing for things she missed out on in life.  I have never in my life read such an emotionally poignant piece of fiction.  This story takes you through a rollercoaster of emotion.  Its a wonderful story of grief and acceptance, and it can really give you a good healthy perspective on appreciating the ones that you love in your life.  All too often we take our lives for granted.

I have to highly, HIGHLY recommend this book.  Read it before you see the film if you can.  If you've already seen the film, read the book.  Its even better.

Review: These Leapfrog DVDs are a ton of fun for little ones.  This time the lovable frogs, Tad and Lily, blast off to the moon to find things for their school math assignment.   The frogs take kids through all types of counting exercises and the realization that math is everywhere and in everything.

We sat our five year old down to view this one and she loved it.  She is in kindergarten, so she is just staring to explore and understand these concepts of math being all around her.  Our seven year old son is in first grade, and is very advanced in math, far beyond his class, and he still got something out of the DVD.  Its not just educational, its entertaining.

We highly recommend this and any of the Leapfrog titles for your little ones.

Death In Love Blu-Ray Review

Death In Love Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: What burdens do the survivors of those who survived carry? A young woman in a Nazi concentration camp saves her life by seducing the young doctor who performs medical experiments on prisoners. Cut to decades later, when that same woman (Bisset) is living in New York City and married with two grown sons.

The two siblings have developed differently under a mother with a long history of erratic behavior. The younger one cant cope at all, and the older one copes too well. Portrayed by Josh Lucas, he is now 40 years old and hides out in psychosexual escapades and a job at a fraudulent modeling agency scamming the young and hopeful. He is good at them both--too good. So why is he growing increasingly frightened? Is he losing his game? His sexual prowess and intellectual diatribes no longer make him feel better. He will have to change to survive.

Review: This is a highly disturbing movie.  I have to preface our review with that statement for the simple fact that it will draw some people in further and others will know that they should move on now!  Me?  I'm in the camp with the drawn in furthers...

The relationships in this film are the focus, from the concentration campes to New York in the 1990s.  There is a montage of brutality, violence and sex.  That cocktail ends up making for a very fine and unique film.  The love-making sequences are violent and abusive, but the acting and performances turned in for this sensual drama are top notch.

The blu-ray looks fantastic.  The film comes out great in high-def with no noticable grain or softness in the picture.  Its grisp, gritty and twisted, just the way it was meant to be seen!

I Am Ozzy Book Review

 I Am Ozzy Book Review

About the Book: "They've said some crazy things about me over the years. I mean, okay: 'He bit the head off a bat.' Yes. 'He bit the head off a dove.' Yes. But then you hear things like, 'Ozzy went to the show last night, but he wouldn't perform until he'd killed fifteen puppies . . .' Now me, kill fifteen puppies? I love puppies. I've got eighteen of the f**king things at home. I've killed a few cows in my time, mind you. And the chickens. I shot the chickens in my house that night.

It haunts me, all this crazy stuff. Every day of my life has been an event. I took lethal combinations of booze and drugs for thirty f**king years. I survived a direct hit by a plane, suicidal overdoses, STDs. I've been accused of attempted murder. Then I almost died while riding over a bump on a quad bike at f**king two miles per hour.

People ask me how come I'm still alive, and I don't know what to say. When I was growing up, if you'd have put me up against a wall with the other kids from my street and asked me which one of us was gonna make it to the age of sixty, which one of us would end up with five kids and four grandkids and houses in Buckinghamshire and Beverly Hills, I wouldn't have put money on me, no f**king way. But here I am: ready to tell my story, in my own words, for the first time.

A lot of it ain't gonna be pretty. I've done some bad things in my time. I've always been drawn to the dark side, me. But I ain't the devil. I'm just John Osbourne: a working-class kid from Aston, who quit his job in the factory and went looking for a good time."

Our Take: Alright, listen.  I don't like Ozzy's music.  I don't.  I won't lie to you.  Its not that I'm not into rock or metal..I am.  Its blasphemous to speak out against the Ozz-Man...but I always have.  What turned the tide for me was the reality show 'The Osbournes'.  I tuned into this show week after week to watch the odd, but loving family that Ozzy and Sharon had raised.   The show made me absolutely fall in love with Ozzy and his family...it even made his music sound better.  Go figure.

When I saw that Ozzy was writing a book I was confused.  Ozzy can barely speak through his thick accent, how is he ever going to communicate?!  He managed, thankfully, and the result is a book thats full of great and cheeky memories from his lifetime.  I wasn't convinced until I heard Ozzy on the Howard Stern Show and he pulled off a great and honest interview with the rocker.  I just found myself yearning to learn more.

He takes us all through his childhood as a poor boy on the streets of the industrial town of Aston in England.  He recounts amusing stories of embaressment, bullying, childhood delinquincy and even abuse from teachers at school.  You learn very quickly what made Ozzy who he is today...a short attention span, an intense fear of growing old and dying in Aston doing factory work and the escape that he felt he needed from his impending life.  He took that escape so far, in fact, that he actually managed to escape it!

Ozzy takes us through a hilarious and sometimes disturbing journey into the presesent day. Through Black Sabbath..his solo years and even the Osburne's tv show.   This is a must for any Ozzy fan.  Even if you're a non-fan like me..this is still a very interesting and fun read!

Toy Review: Lego Construct-A-Buzz Lightyear

Toy Review: Lego Construct-A-Buzz Lightyear

Review courtesy of our network site: www.PixarCollector.com

Is it an unchartered mission in secret space? No, its BUZZ LIGHTYEAR! Lego has newly obtained the Toy Story license. Kids and Adults alike just fainted! You can only imagine what Lego is going to do with it, right? Imagine no more, because these toys are starting to hit shelves at Super Target and Toys ‘R Us locations, not to mention the online Lego store.

Today we’re going to feature the Construct-a-Buzz. The most important part of any Lego set, in this reviewer’s opinion, is the mini-figure. Its what lasts in your mind with a Lego set and what you want to ensure that you have for your collection. This Construct-a-Buzz comes with..wait for it….and Alien mini-figure! Its adorable. Plain and simple.

How difficult is the set? Not very. The recommended age range is 7-14. My 7 year old son got ahold of it and had it built in minutes, so its perfectly on-target for the age recommendations.

How does it look? You can see from the pictures…its amazing. Lego has really outdone themselves, like usual. He reminds me of the huge Lego statues you sometimes see as a promotion for their various licenses. He’s a great homage to Lego and Toy Story sitting on your shelf. Its great for a collector, because he stays together well and doesn’t lose pieces easily. Its great for kids because, well they can build and play with their own Lego Buzz Lightyear! Whats not to love, right?

The price point on this item is around $25

Women in Trouble Blu-Ray Review

Women in Trouble Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: An outrageous comedy about ten very different women with one thing in common.Written and directed by Sebastian Gutierrez (Snakes on a Plane, The Eye), this critically acclaimed film features a knockout ensemble cast including Carla Gugino (Watchmen, American Gangster), Emmanuelle Chriqui (Cadillac Records, "Entourage"), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (500 Days of Summer, 10 Things I Hate About You), Connie Britton ("Friday Night Lights", "Spin City"), Simon Baker ("The Mentalist", The Devil Wears Prada), Adrianne Palicki ("Friday Night Lights", "South Beach"), Elizabeth Berkeley ("Saved by the Bell", Showgirls) and Marley Shelton (A Perfect Getaway, W.)

Review: Ever since Pulp Fiction there has been a rash of cheeky and personality-filled ensemble films that tell multiple character stories at once and then tie them all in.  Its not that Pulp Fiction created the genre, but it really made it mainstream.  With Women in Trouble, director Sebastian Gutierrez takes this concept and inserts women that are a huge mess.

This fim is at it's base a comedy, but there are some heavy moments to be sure.  The film follows a number of women...a pregnant porn star, a few women trapped in an elevator, a wife that is getting cheated on, etc.  It follows each of their situations and then at the end we get a big tie-in.

The blu-ray features about ten minutes of deleted scenes, which is great.  The high-definition quality is overall nice on the blu-ray, there are a few moments of inconsistancy, but its hardly noticable.  Overall, we recommend this film.  Its a good watch.

Synopsis: Ricky, Julian and Bubbles are about to get out of jail, and this time, Julian vows to go straight, even open a legit business.  Soon the Boys will all be rich.  At least that's what they've told the parole board.  But when they arrive back at the park, they find it's not the same old Sunnyvale - and it's not the same old Jim Lahey, Trailer Park Supervisor.  Lahey's a new man, hasn't had a drink for two years.  And he has plans - BIG PLANS - for Sunnyvale.  But unfortunately for Lahey, Julian stands in his way.

Review: This movie is insane.  The show lasted seven seasons, which to me is odd.  I've seen amazing shows that can't make it more than one or two, but okay.  Its not that the trailer park boys isn't funny at times..its just that its hit and miss.

The movie showcases the boys getting out of prison (see previous movie) and heading back to the trailer park, only to find that life is changing too much for their tastes.  They find it challenging to 'go straight' in the changing world around them.

This continuation of the Trailer Park Boys saga is definately a step above the first film, with deadpan humor and some rather ackward moments, but it still misses the mark a bit and seems to try a little bit too hard.  It is funny and worth a watch, but the show is still far funnier.

Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 02/23/2010 Starring: Matt Damon Frank Welker Run time: 108 minutes Rating: R

Review: The best way to describe this film is as an unconventional comedy.  I went into it thinking that it may be looking for a few cheap laughs and honestly by the trailers that I saw when it was in theaters it looked as though it was trying too hard.  Another example of bad marketing.  The film is, in fact, not trying too hard, but flows right into it's own little groove of intrigue, delusion and oddity.

The film begins in 1992, though for some reason they play a lot of 70s music and have retro-esque transitions in-between some scenes.  I can write that off to a quirk of director Steven Soderbergh's (Oceans 11-13).  The main character basically goes through the ordeal of becoming an FBI informant and turning on his bosses.  The entire film we hear his quirky inner-dialogue and realize that even when he seems deeply invested in a moment, his mind is racing elsewhere.

Matt Damon turns in a unique and inspired performance that contrats his Jason Bourne character so completely that it really serves as a fantastic resume for his acting range.  The Informant was surprising to us in a very good way.  The twists and turns and ultimate understanding of the mind of this character is a ride that isn't to be missed!

Toy Review: LOTR Gandalf vs. Balrog Dioramma

Toy Review: LOTR Gandalf vs. Balrog Dioramma

About the product: A limited edition of 1000.  Sideshow Collectibles proudly presents ‘The Duel of Light and Fire’ – Gandalf vs. Balrog Diorama, the newest piece to join The Lord of the Rings Diorama series. This powerful diorama depicts Gandalf’s selfless act as he places himself between the demon Balrog and the Fellowship of the Ring. Each piece is cast in high quality polystone, hand-finished, and hand-painted to exacting standards. ‘The Duel of Light and Fire’ – Gandalf vs. Balrog Diorama is a fine addition to any The Lord of the Rings collection.
Our Take: The dioramma features the epic scene eluded to in the Fellowship of the Ring, but shown fully in the Two Towers. Gandalf and the Fellowship are crossing through the dark dwarf-controlled mountain inards around the bridge of Khazad Dum, when they encounter an ancient evil…the Balrog! Gandalf battles with the creature, but his grey wizard magic isn’t enough, the two fall into the deep depths of the earth engaged in an epic battle that eventually evolves Gandalf into a white wizard!
The Balrog has been rarely featured in Lord of the Rings merchandise, until now. The detail work on this full-scale dioramma is absolutely breathtaking. The Balrog is featured in all its glory with heat enfused flesh and an encompasing wingspan. Gandalf is a tiny addition, to show the scale difference between the two characters

When we saw pics of this one online it wasn’t that impressive. Pictures honestly can’t do it enough justice. This is one of the most amazing pieces I’ve ever seen and its definately a tops for Sideshow Collectibles. They really outdid themselves on this one.
Its large..I won’t lie to you. About 18″ in height alone, not to mention the width. I recommend having a large, enclosed display case for it or a VERY sturdy bookcase for it to go on the top of, but you must own this piece before its gone. The Hobbit is coming out in a year or two, and Funko is already producing some LOTR product, so Lord of the Rings fever is going to strike again!  I cannot recommend this one enough!

Black Dynamite Blu-Ray Review

Black Dynamite Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: An all-star cast led by Michael Jai White is featured in this 1970's-style blaxploitation action fiilm about the legendary super crime fighter "Black Dynamite." The Man killed his brother, pumped heroin into local orphanages, and flooded the ghetto with adulterated malt liquor. Black Dynamite was the one hero willing to fight The Man all the way from the blood-soaked city streets to the hallowed halls of the Honky House.

Review: I really thought that blacksploitation movies were a thing of the past.  I used to catch re-runs of Blackula late at night.  They were just the best thing ever.  They were long dead...until now!

If you enjoy any ackward and deadpan comedy you'll love this.  Do you like the Simpsons, Family Guy or Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia?  This is the film for you.  If you have a great sense of humor you'll be into this one from the word go.  I could go into the story, but that'd be really pointless here.  What draws you to Black Dynamite is the hilarious modern take on an old genre.  There's afros and kung-fu and disdain for the white man.  Do you need anything else?!

The blu-ray is the way to go.  This film does have a very retro-feel to it on purpose, but the blu-ray still looks fantastic.  This is a fun view, would be great for watching with a group of friends or at a party.  Buy it now, Sucka!

The South Park Kit: Dude, Sweet Review

The South Park Kit: Dude, Sweet Review

About the Kit: South Park has built a remarkably large and loyal fan base since its debut in 1997. Now for the first time ever, fans can get their hands on the official South Park Kit and all its cool contents. Kit includes:

• Goth Kids coffee mug
• Towelie microfiber computer cloth
• Terrance and Philip movie poster
• Warning: Manbearpig! poster
• Vote Douche and Vote Turd campaign pins
South Park Word Magnet
The Ultimate South Park Fan Trivia Quiz book

Our Take: This kit is comprised of both very good and very bad items.  Allow me to explain....firstly and most importantly we should focus on the book.  There is an ultimate trivia quiz book packed into the set.   This book has page after page of obscure South Park trivia.  Its very thorough, well put together and a fun read.

The kit has a few very positive items, like the Goth kids mug.  If you've seen the goth kids episode, then you realize how funny this is.  If not, well, then you need to see it!  Trust me.  Also, the Towelie computer cloth and the magnets are very cool.

The set does have a few downsides.  Its not that these are actually bad things, they're just not that interesting to maybe an average fan.  The Manbearpig poster is kind of obscure, even for South Park fans.  I would've much rather had just a poster with a ton of the cast members on it, but thats just me.

Overall, a great set. This one makes a very affordable and fun gift.

How to Buy: You can get this item on Amazon.com or on the Running Press website

Che: A Graphic Biography Book Review

Che: A Graphic Biography Book Review

About the Book: A symbol of counterculture worldwide, Ernesto “Che” Guevara is one of the most, if not the most, recognizable and influential revolutionary figures of the twentieth century. From the pages of history textbooks to silk-screened T-shirts at Urban Outfitters, his mythologized face is positively unavoidable. But what, exactly, does this glorified image stand for?

Our Take: He has already been plastered on t-shirts and band stickers for decades, and now Che Guevara has become a comic book super star!  The question does beg from many people, who is Che?  Why is he so important?  This book takes great strives to answer those questions.

The writing in the graphic novel is obviously not as extensive as it could be in an all-out book, but I've read my share of comics books both in childhood and adulthood and this one stacks up nicely.  It is respectful and does justice to the source material and is careful to stay unbiased on the subject.

Now, the just as important aspect in a graphic novel....the artwork.  I'm an artist myself and I'm rather particular about such things.  I have to be honest, I wasn't impressed by the art in this title.  The drawings of Che look enough like him, but they're very basic and uninteresting.  It would've been nice to see someone with either more skill or a unique style take a shot at it.  Still, it is good enough to make the book an enjoyable read.

Che: A Comic Biography is a great way to get a young person or someone interested in comics to read something real.  Che's story is one of humanity and struggle and independance and it should be shared with all generations.

The Mystery of Lewis Carroll: Discovering the Whimsical, Thoughtful, and Sometimes Lonely Man Who Created "Alice in Wonderland" Book Review

The Mystery of Lewis Carroll: Discovering the Whimsical, Thoughtful, and Sometimes Lonely Man Who Created "Alice in Wonderland" Book Review

Book Synopsis:  A new biography of Lewis Carroll, just in time for the release of Tim Burton’s all-star Alice in Wonderland Lewis Carroll was brilliant, secretive and self contradictory. He reveled in double meanings and puzzles, in his fiction and his life. Jenny Woolf’s The Mystery of Lewis Carroll shines a new light on the creator of Alice In Wonderland and brings to life this fascinating, but sometimes exasperating human being whom some have tried to hide. Using rarely-seen and recently discovered sources, such as Carroll’s accounts ledger and unpublished correspondence with the “real” Alice’s family, Woolf sets Lewis Carroll firmly in the context of the English Victorian age and answers many intriguing questions about the man who wrote the Alice books, such as: • Was it Alice or her older sister that caused him to break with the Liddell family? • How true is the gossip about pedophilia and certain adult women that followed him? • How true is the “romantic secret” which many think ruined Carroll’s personal life? • Who caused Carroll major financial trouble and why did Carroll successfully conceal that person’s identity and actions? Woolf answers these and other questions to bring readers yet another look at one of the most elusive English writers the world has known.

Our Take: We've always been interested in the enigma of Lewis Carroll, but with the new Disney/Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland sequel coming to theaters in March 2010, our excitement is really amping up!  This is a perfect time to release this very insightful and interesting book on the truth behind the mystique of Lewis Carroll, and St. Martin's Press did just that!

The full-size hardcover book has a very attractive dust jacket (see above) and gives a very crisp presentation visually.  The text is easy to read through and doesn't get too wordy.  It would be easy to get overly verbose with a period character like Carroll, or to give in to pressures to seem deeper than one is to gain credibility, but the author does a very nice job of speaking to you directly and in simple terms.

This isn't just a re-hash of older biographical tributes.  The Mystery of Lewis Carroll actually has new things to say and new revelations, such as his bank account that was found in the archvies of Barclay's Bank.  The records of the account sheds new light on the various charitable contributions that Carroll was responsible for, which are vast, generous and compassionate.  This book paints the picture of a man that is often misunderstood, and therefore should be read.  We highly recommend this title.

Synopsis: Robert DeNiro leads an acclaimed all-star cast Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell in Everybody s Fine, the heartwarming film that will move you to laughter and tears. When Frank Goode's (DeNiro) grown children cancel a family reunion, the recent widower sets off on a cross-country journey to reconnect with each of them. Expecting to share in the joys of their happy, successful lives, his surprise visits reveal a picture that's far from perfect. A family separated by physical and emotional distance finds a way to come together in a story that will touch your heart.  Bonus Features include The Making Of Paul McCartney's (I Want To) Come Home, Deleted & Extended Scenes

Review: I went into Everybody's Fine thinking that it was going to be a cliche 'feel good' film.  I don't know why I felt this way, I guess it was just the previews that lead me to think this.  I wasn't prepared for the film that I actually got....

The basic premise is that Robert De Niro is all by himself.  His wife has died and his children are all moved away.  He is expecting them all back home around the same table, but thats not going to happen.  They each put him off and you can tell by his desolate 'About Schmidt-esque' life that he needs them.  He goes on a cross-country journey to try and surprise and visit all of his children, but they're all lying to him.  Why?  To protect him...and themselves.

I really related to this film as a father.  I'm honestly not sure if you'll care about this film if you're not a parent.  It really drives home some of the overwhelming emotions that you feel about your kids and the end of your life.  Ironically, children represent youth and life, but they make you think about the end of yours.  The things you need to rest peacefully.  Personally, I want my children to be ok.  To be happy.  Thats the theme of this film, and its a journey that every parent should take.  We highly recommend this film.

Sewing Green: 25 Projects Made with Repurposed & Organic Materials Book Review

Sewing Green: 25 Projects Made with Repurposed & Organic Materials Book Review

About This Book: By its nature, do-it-yourself sewing is environmentally friendly. In Sewing Green, Betz White takes stitching to an even higher level of sustainability, presenting 25 projects made from "repurposed" thrift-store and back-of-the-closet finds and organic fabrics.

White’s whimsical yet practical designs include an apron constructed from men’s dress shirts (and a wallet from the shirts’ cuffs!), a soft blanket pieced from secondhand cashmere sweaters, and even a tote bag refashioned from used Tyvek envelopes. Along the way, White dispenses tips on everything from how to deconstruct old garments for reuse in new creations to how to wrap gifts with resusable fabric scraps instead of paper.

Inspiring profiles about well-known leaders in the eco-stitching movement are sprinkled throughout, and a complete resources section helps crafters make eco-smart choices. With Sewing Green, today’s sewers will be fashioning handmade heirlooms and sustaining traditions for generations to come.

Our Take: We've been through a lot of sewing books in our day.  My wife is a seamstress and she creates a lot of her own clothing by re-using and re-making old clothing, so we felt that this book might be of interest.  We werent' prepared for just how amazing and innovative it was going to be!

This book not only teaches one how to sew some creative projects, but if has a large focus on actual repurposing.  One great example is a sunshade made from Capri Sun fruit drink pouches and a picnic blanket made from old vinyl tableclothes.  The author even goes as far as to include paterns in the back of the book for your use!

In a day and age when we're all not only trying to be green, but to save a few dollars, this book is well worth the investment.  It can help you to recycle and re-use all sorts of old household items to make new and useful ones.  Its absolutely amazing and unique.  This book would make a great gift for anyone of any age.

But the Bounts have many tricks up their sleeves, and it looks like certain defeat for Ichigo and his comrades. Uryu, who had lost his Quincy powers, is the key to the Bount leader Kariya’s plans for revenge against the Soul Society, as well as the key to his defeat. Will Uryu be able to regain his powers in time to save his friends?

Review: Bleach is one of those rare anime series that has it all.  Everything from action and horror to extreme slapstick comedy.  I won't get too in-depth on the storyline, because we don't want to spoil anything for you, but our observations about this DVD set are this....its fantastic.  Why?  You have everything from soul vampires to flying eyeballs and the pizza cutter from hell.  On the flipside, we get intense action and story drama coupled with people turning to dust and soul reapers.

Sounds crazy?  It is!  Thats the beauty of Bleach.  Just when you think it may be getting a little too heavy and taking itself a bit too seriously, it throws something hilarious at you to break the tension.

If you're a fan of Bleach, this set is definately something you need to pick-up.  If you just enjoy anime in general, now is as good a time as any to delve into the Bleach universe!   You can enjoy Ichigo and the gang take on the bounts!   We highly recommend this set.

Law Abiding Citizen DVD Review

Law Abiding Citizen DVD Review

Synopsis: Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) is an upstanding family man whose wife and daughter are brutally murdered during a home invasion. When the killers are caught, Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx), a hotshot young Philadelphia prosecutor, is assigned to the case. Over his objections, Nick is forced by his boss to offer one of the suspects a light sentence in exchange for testifying against his accomplice. Fast forward ten years. The man who got away with murder is found dead and Clyde Shelton admits his guilt. Then he issues a warning to Nick: Either fix the flawed justice system, or key players in the trial will die. Soon Shelton follows through on his threats, orchestrating from his jail cell a string of spectacularly diabolical assassinations that can be neither predicted nor prevented. Only Nick can stop the killing and finds himself in a desperate race against time facing a deadly adversary who seems always to be one step ahead.

Review: I used to dislike Jamie Foxx.  I won't lie about it..I fully admit that I felt he was overrated.  I used to watch him on 'In Living Color' and I felt like this foray into the dramatic was absurd, especially considering the music album he did.  Laughable.  My attitude was changed, however, when I saw a special advanced screening of 'The Soloist' with my wife last year.  She's a Robert Downey Jr. sort of gal, so I take her to all of this films.   Anyhew, the point being, he has proven his dramatic chops to me ten-fold.  I now consider myself a casual fan of his work and I put him on a dramatic level with actors like Denzel Washington, which is saying something.  Gerard Butler..I didn't take him very seriously after '300', but he also has proven himself to have some range, although he hasn't made the best choices on all of his projects (ie: Gamer!...ugh.)

Along comes 'Law Abiding Citizen'.  The first trailer I see doesn't really interest me, but since I'm flooded with them for a matter of weeks, I do take notice eventually.  We popped in this DVD looking to get a typical thriller, but low and behold I was shocked  yet again by something more interesting.   Butler really gives us his menacing heel face on this one and he does an exquisite job.  He's meant to play the bad guy!   Although is he really the bad guy?  Thats one of the interesting moral dilemas of this film...who do you side with?

I can't reveal much in my review, because I don't want to spoil even one of the twists and turns for you, but suffice to say that this rather picky reviewer was impressed.  I highly recommend the film.  Go pick it up on DVD, its worth watching more than once!

Synopsis: Scooby-Doo and the gang go on a trip to check on Daphne's sister, Melissa. She's been studying magic at the Whirlen Merlin Magic Academy. Apparently there's been trouble at the Academy. Sightings of a giant dragon have been scaring all the students away. The gang smells trouble and decides to investigate.

Review: Scooby-Doo has been around for so many decades and he's gone through so many changes that there is a little something for everyone.  From 'A Pup Named Scooby Doo' to 'Shaggy and Scooby-Doo Get a Clue', they have constantly tried to re-invent our favorite characters for the generations.  Heck, they've even made some rather odd live-action films.  This time around, Warner Bros. is taking a step back and giving us some more classicly-themed animation.   Abracadabra-Doo really takes you back to the old Scooby-Doo movies of the 1970s!

The gang is trying to help Velma's little sister Madelyn, who is at Magician School, as they are being haunted by a griffin (a half lion, half eagle creature).   This film brings fans a few new things.  Firstly, its the debut of Matthew Lillard as the voice of Shaggy.  You know Lillard as the actor that played Shaggy in the live-action film.  He's a great replacement for Casey Kasem.  Also, the gang has some inner-drama!  Fred's eyes stray to this new magician's assistant, so a jealous Daphne tries to get his attention.  Shaggy is also a subject of a crush from Velma's sister!

If you're a fan of Scooby and the gang, this film is for you.  Its great for the kids and fun for the adults.  We highly recommend it.

We're going to be giving away four copies of this film on DVD!  Watch for that post on the site later today!

20th Century Boys 2: The Last Hope DVD Review

20th Century Boys 2: The Last Hope DVD Review

Synopsis: It is now 2015, and Friend rules a disturbing new world. Kenji has been missing since the Bloody New Year’s Eve of 2000, and his niece Kanna, who has been looked after by Yukuji, is now in high school. Her history textbook contains a fabricated story about Kenji and his friends being the terrorists behind the horrific events of 2000. Kanna, knowing the truth, openly resents this, and as a result she is marked as a problem child by her teacher and sent to the Friend Land program because of her anti-Friend behavior. Friend Land is a facility where people with rebellious behavior are re-educated. As the program begins, Kanna and her classmate Kyoko Koizumi achieve high marks and are sent to the advanced program called the Bonus Stage, where they find themselves in a virtual reconstruction of 1971, when Kenji and his friends were kids. There, each of the girls learns crucial secrets about Friend. The surviving secret base members have been separated since Bloody New Year’s Eve but each has spent the last 15 years in various activities opposing Friend and his regime. Otcho has been incarcerated in Umihotaru Prison. Yoshitune now leads an underground group against Friend. Maruo works for an important figure in the regime, waiting for the right time to act against Friend.

As Kenji’s friends all try to find out the truth about Friend, they discover the shocking existence of The New Book of Prophecy, the sequel to The Book of Prophecy. The New Book describes an event: In 2015, at a church in Shinjuku, a savior will rise to uphold justice but will be assassinated. Who is the savior? Once again, Doomsday looms near...

Review: I had actually never heard of the 20th Century Boys until we got this film in the mail.  I'm so used to seeing Viz distribute anime, I was surprised by this live action feature.  This movie is #2 in a trilogy of live-action films dedicated to the infamous manga from creator Naoki Urasawa.   Apparently this franchise has been a big phenominon in Japan for some time, and we're just now getting the imports of the movie trilogy.

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this, so I went back and read the comics.  I have to say that this was a very good adaptation of the book.  The characters Kanna and Otcho really stood out in both dialogue and action sequences.  They really helped to carry the film through.  It kinda feels like the Empire Strikes Back of the Series, its biding its time and building up to something larger.

The film comes in Japanese language with optional English subtitles.  I recommend buying the first part of the trilogy before watching part 2, it'd make a lot more sense!

The South Park Guide to Life Book Review

The South Park Guide to Life Book Review

About the Book: Since the first episode aired on Comedy Central in 1997, South Park has proven to be one of the most socially relevant and downright hilarious television shows of all time. No series skewers pop culture and politics with more effective wit and wisdom than South Park—from dysfunctional family life to bad manners to the entire country of Canada, for the residents of this tiny town, no subject is sacred or taboo!
A regular ratings monster and Emmy-winner, South Park is also an unlikely source of advice on all facets of life. Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny along with the rest of the town offer hilariously twisted insights and questionable counsel on topics such as teamwork, spirituality, and the opposite sex. South Park Guide to Life is a much anticipated collection of colorful illustrations and original lines from the show. Great for grads and fans alike!

Our Take: Are you a South Park fan?  If you've seen the show, you probably are.  Oh, maybe you don't like to admit it so much, but you laugh..admit it!   Here at Book Legion we're unabashed fans of the juvenille humor of Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny!  This novelty book, 'The South Park Guide To Life', is not only affordable, but its fun.

This book offers still shots from the show with some of the funniest quotes from its various characters.  Its a straight-up comedy book.  No unnecessary text, just quote after hilarious and inappropriate quote!

Its one of those thats great to have sitting around in the restroom..on a coffee table..or even in the car for when you're bored and need to kill a little time.  Its a great pick-me-up to have on your desk at work when you want to lighten up.

The Life and Times of Tim DVD Review

The Life and Times of Tim DVD Review

Synopsis: What happens when your girlfriend comes home before your hooker has left? How do you convince the police you weren't really raped by a bum during a bachelor's party? What do you do when a priest asks you to object to a wedding, as a prank? What happens when your boss orders you to change your ethnicity in order to meet his corporate quotas? Meet Tim: an ordinary guy who makes a habit out of misunderstanding in The Life & Times of Tim a hilarious, new, adult animated series from HBO.

Review: There are very few animated series for adults.  South Park stands out as one, but honestly even it falls short of truly inappropriate behavior at times.  The HBO show The Life and Times of Tim, on the other hand, stretches all boundries.

The absurdity of the situations that Tim gets in is at such a sophomoric, but hilarious level that you can't help but laugh.  The animation is horrid, of course.  You have eyes...you can see this, but its not about that.  Tim is a very dry character that also exhibits possibly the worst judgement known to man, outside of myself!

I didn't think I'd dig this show going into it, but I have to admit that I was laughing at Tim's antics.  From hiding hookers to..well...you'll have to watch it to find out.  Its well worth it!

Join the lovable Fraggles and pals in these spring-filled episodes blooming with friendship and fun! Includes 3 episodes: "Wembley’s Egg," "The Great Radish Famine" and "The Finger of Light."

Review: Fraggle Rock is a cult favorite amongst certain 1980s loonatics.  For the record...I'm one of those lunatics.  The show has been released in recent years, and then released in full seasons again by Lionsgate.  To accompany these seasons, a few single disc DVDs have made it out into the marketplace.  This is the latest.  If you're on the fence about Fraggle Rock for yourself or you just don't know if your kids will dig it enough to invest in seasons, this is the DVD for you.

The DVD has a running springtime theme with three episodes from the classic Jim Henson show.  It also has a bonus feature of one of the episodes from the animated series, which is also available on DVD.  Will your kids like Fraggle Rock?  Its full of singing...good lessons..and most importantly...MUPPETS!  How can you go wrong there?  If they like Sesame Street or the Muppets then they'll love Fraggle Rock!  You aren't sure if it stands the test of time?  It does.  You love it.  Buy it.  Do it!  Now!

Sports Illustrated Kids Book Series Review

Sports Illustrated Kids Book Series Review

Reading Levels: Ages 3-8

About the Books:
Battle for Home Plate: Justin and Carlos have played on the same baseball team since their T-ball days. But this season, the friends are forced to play on rival teams. Carlos makes new friends on the field, and Justin is left in the dust. When their teams face each other in the final game of the season, Justin and Carlos aren't even speaking. The game comes down to one run, and Carlos rounds third. What will happen when the former best friends collide at home plate?

Full Court Pressure: Star defensive player Zack Fuller is in a tough spot. His new Panthers teammates don't trust him. The players on the Bulldogs, his old squad, think he's a traitor for leaving. When the two teams face each other in the playoffs, Zack has to guard his former best friend. To make matters worse, the Panthers captain refuses to pass the ball to Zack. Caught between a Panther and a Bulldog, and in serious foul trouble, Zack will have to find a way to play through the pressure.

Kickoff Blitz: Tou Yang is the smallest kid on his football team, but he plays like a giant. Tou's job is to dash down the field and smash the ball carrier on kickoffs and punts, and he does it well. When the Bandits come to town, an old enemy on the other side of the line goes out of his way to bring Tou down. Darren cuts corners and plays dirty. Will Tou be able to overcome his gridiron bully, or will Darren send him to the sidelines?

Point-Blank Paintball: Peter and Noah Eccleston are identical twins, so it's no surprise they make the perfect paintball teammates. But when Coach Patterson offers them a chance to compete for a single spot on his elite paintball team, the brothers turn on each other. With markers blazing, the twins cut down the competition with ease. But when they finally face off against each other for a point-blank shootout, who will be the first to pull the trigger?

Reality Check: When he's playing hockey, Ricky Holder hits hard and never holds back. During a scrimmage, Ricky plays rough and injures his own team's top scorer. Ricky's father is proud of him, but his teammates ditch him because of his dangerous checks. Ricky tries to ease up a little, but his teammates won't forgive him, and his father is mad that he's not giving 110 percent. Can he fix things before the state's toughest team comes to town?

Skateboard Sonar: Matty Lyons is a top-notch skateboarder who can do all the coolest tricks. His moves are even more impressive since he's blind. But not everyone is a fan of the talented grinder. During the state's biggest skating competition, former champion Bing Hawtin mocks Matty, saying that a blind kid has no chance to win. But Matty knows something Bing doesn't . . . seeing isn't everything.

Our Take: Ok, let me start out by announcing that I am NOT a sports fan.  I'm not into sports...not a sports person whatsoever.  You may have guessed this by the fact that I run a network of nerdy websites.  I mean, I review books....what'd you seriously expect, right?  Here is the thing with these releases from Capstone Kids....they rock, plain and simple.  Why?  Read on....

I gave this stack of books from Capstone and Sports Illustrated Kids to my own children and they went nuts!  They too aren't into sports, but these aren't books for jocks.  These are extreme sports and the focus is really on the characters and story.  The sports hobbies are really just a backdrop.  They're fun and interesting and not at all geared just towards jocky kids.

We wanted to feature this series and bring them to your attention, whether you're a librarian, teacher or a parent, these titles should be in your possession!  They can be purchased in hardback library binding or softcover.

Where to Buy: The Capstone Publishing Website
