Ranking the Best Batman Video Games

Superhero franchises from the likes of DC Comics and Marvel have proven fruitful ground for games developers through the years, and the caped crusader regularly features at the top of their hitlist.

Batman is such an iconic figure, as are his merry band of support staff and enemies, that it's little wonder that the Arkham world has proven so fertile to the imaginations of software developers around the globe.

The upshot is that we, as gamers, have been able to benefit from a raft of different titles released on a variety of consoles through the years, and while some are instantly forgettable, others have proven to be a benchmark for gaming as a whole, rather than just elevating the adventures of Bruce Wayne and co. to another level.

If that has whetted your appetite for some Batman based gaming, here's a countdown of the five best video games featuring everybody's favorite crime-fighting ass kicker.

Arkham Asylum

Not only is this the best Batman video game ever made, it also represents something of a landmark moment for gaming as a whole.

Of course, open-world adventures are nothing new and the genre was pioneered by the Grand Theft Auto series years before, but Arkham Asylum was the first time that a superhero was dropped into such an environment.

And the results are stunning, with Rocksteady Studios producing an authentic representation which players can navigate using our hero's plethora of gadgets and gizmos (thanks for those, Alfred).

With an exclusive script penned by long-time Batman visionary Paul Dini, Arkham Asylum is a standalone title not based on a movie, but it was still able to draw big-name voice characters and Star Wars legend Mark Hamill is on great form as ever as The Joker and the game remains an inspiration for software developers the world over; not just as a comic book crossover, but as a new generation title of the highest quality in its own right.

Lego Batman: The Video Game

Voiced by Will Arnett, there's no doubt that Batman is the standout character of the Lego Movie series.

Here he's given his own video game, in which you must guide the caped crusader and Robin to victory over The Joker and his assorted goons.

But the real draw is the Lego game world, in which you can use bricks to create all manner of weird and wonderful gadgets and weapons.

It's super-fun, and a standout game in its own right.

Batman: Arkham Origins

Another run-out for the Arkham series here, and while the most recent release, Arkham Knight is the most visually stunning and completely unputdownable (that's a word, right?), it's the prequel that perhaps best captured the Batman universe.

Set on Christmas Eve, Arkham Origins delves deeper into the world of the caped crusader than ever before, giving players eight end-of-level bosses to overcome including The Joker and Bane.

Mixing stealth and close combat, you can frequent Gotham City as you wish while taking down the evil Black Mask and his cronies. An epic adventure.

Batman & The Joker Jewels

Time for something a little out of the ordinary now.

For many Batman aficionados, the world created by Christian Bale in the modern iterations was a welcome rejuvenation of the movie franchise.

But for many, it was the TV-based adventures of Adam West as our hero and the legendary Cesar Romero as The Joker that best encapsulate the comic book's tongue-in-cheek humor.

Adam West Batman 1965

Batman & The Joker Jewels brings this world to the modern gamer, but in a unique format: as a slot game available at a number of online casinos.

Match a number of symbols, from Batman and The Joker to the Batmobile and his utility belt, and you could win genuine cash prizes.

And with many online casinos offering bonus funds and free spins, it's possible to take on Gotham City's baddest eggs and make some money at the same time!

Batman: Return of the Joker

In the early 1990s, video games were slightly less immersive than they are today thanks to the latest tech wizardry.

And so titles on consoles like the NES and Sega Mega Drive tended to be quite cartoony in look and generally play from left-to-right on a scrolling screen.

It was that formula that was used to great effect in Batman: Return of the Joker, a release for the Nintendo that sat alongside the likes of Golden Axe and Streets of Rage in the genre.

It looks a tad dated these days, but the gameplay is highly rewarding and you get to man the controls of both the Batmobile and Batwing. What's not to like about that?

Ben Barnes Posts Picture of Himself as Batman

Ben Affleck is officially out of the picture as Bruce Wayne, so who will replace him? That has been the question lighting up the internet over the past week. One of the names being tossed around is that man that gave an emotional and masterful performance as a villain for the "other guys".

Ben Barnes portrayed Jigsaw for the Netflix Marvel Punisher show. His name has been in the talks for the role and he himself posted a nice fan-art piece on his Instagram, showing him in the cape and cowl. Will Barnes be the Caped Crusder for the Matt Reeves The Batman movie?

The DC Extended Universe will have the following films releasing soon:
  • Shazam!, release date April 05, 2019
  • Joker, release date October 4, 2019
  • Wonder Woman 2, release date November 1, 2019

Four Must Play Batman Video Games

Four Must Play Batman Video Games

The popularity of the Batman franchise has forced many game developers to consider incorporating elements of Batman in their games or outright create Batman inspired movies. Over the years, dozens of such Batman inspired games have been created. From these dozens, we have decided to cull them down to four of the best Batman inspired games. Players looking to have a taste of these four games can do so at NetBet slots where all of them are available for free play.

The Adventures of Batman and Robin.

The Adventures of Batman and Robin is a run ‘n’ gun video game created by Konami. The game was first released in 1994 with more patches being added in 1995. In this game, the player assumes the role of Batman i.e. if a single player is playing. The game can also be played by two players with one assuming the role of Batman and the other assuming the role of Robin. The objective in The Adventures of Batman and Robin is to stop Mr. Freeze from implementing his plan (the plan is to freeze the city of Gotham). However, Batman and Robin’s tasks are made difficult because Mr. Freeze works with other unscrupulous elements such as the Joker, Mad Hatter and Two-Face all of whom need to be stopped.
Batman: Return of the Joker
Batman: Return of the Joker is also known as Dynamite Batman. The game is developed by Sunsoft and it can only be played by a single player. The game starts with the Joker escaping from Arkham Asylum. After escaping, the Joker joins hands with five mercenaries who are planning to destroy the city of Gotham. Before they can execute their plan, word reaches Batman (character controlled by the player) that the city of Gotham is under threat. Batman, therefore, has to act fast to save the city of Gotham by neutralizing the Joker’s threat.

Batman: The Animated Series

Batman: The Animated Series is a branded video game from Konami which is based on the movie which goes by the same title i.e. Batman: The Animated Series. In this game, the player assumes the role of either Batman or Robin. Batman and Robin have different skill sets, Batman has special powers to use a grappling hook to scale heights. Robin, on the other hand, can walk across ceilings. However, both of them can perform wall jumps. The objective in this game is for the player (be it Batman or Robin) to save the city of Gotham by eliminating the threat posed by the Joker and his mercenary friends.

Batman: The Caped Crusader

Batman: The Caped Crusader was released in 1988 by Special FX Software. This is a single player action adventure arcade game. The player assumes the role of Batman. The objective for Batman is to save the village that he lives in. to do so, he will have to fight against the henchmen who are bent on destroying the village. Batman uses punches and kicks as his defense weapons.

Legendary Batman Artist Norm Breyfogle Has Died

Norm Breyfogle Batman Artist Passed Away Age 58

The news has finally come out that legendary Batman artist Norm Breyfogle passed away this past Monday at age 58. Norm had suffered a stroke that left him unable to draw back in December 2014, which also left him understandably devastated and depressed. His exact cause of death has not yet been released.

I wasn't a close friend of Norm's, but we did interact quite a bit over the years. He was a very opinionated and serious, but also gracious man to his fans. He was kind enough to help me with a lot of background information on the Batmobile that he designed (see below) when I was researching and writing the Batman's Arsenal book and would always take time out to interact. Norm would come and go from time to time online, sometimes getting very depressed and putting those emotions to words. He would each time recover and find a new fire to keep him going, but the loss of his artistic gift clearly took a very serious toll on him.

Norm defined the Batman look for a generation in the late 1980s and early 1990s and will be always remembered by comic book fans for his numerous contributions to he legacy of the Dark Knight. Thank you for everything you gave fans of Batman and DC Comics. Rest in peace, we won't forget you.

Finally Revealed - Joaquin Phoenix In The Joker Movie Make-Up!

Joaquin Phoenix Joker Make-Up Test

It's the reveal we've all been waiting for Bat-Fans...Joaquin Phoenix in the iconic Joker make-up. This was revealed on Twitter first by Joker director Todd Phillips and then re-tweeted by Warner Brothers. We've included the footage below for you to check out.

The look is very raw and since this is a screen test, the final make-up may go through more evolutions by the time the film is done. This does, however, give us an idea of how Phoenix is being handled.

Joaquin Phoenix in Joker Make-Up

LOG Opinion Time: This reminds perhaps of how The Joker could have looked if the Batman movie that Michael Uslan was trying to get made in the late 1970s hadn't taken a decade to get onto the big screen. We haven't seen this thicker make-up style for some time...perhaps they were inspired by another evil movie clown by the name of "IT"?

The DC Extended Universe will have the following films releasing soon:
Aquaman (2018) release date: Dec 21, 2018

The Batman Cartoon - Behind The Scenes - Exclusive Style Guide | Legions of Gotham

The Batman Cartoon Fansite - The Batman Matsuda 2004-2009
Behind the Scenes of The Batman Cartoon - The Batman Production Art

Legions of Gotham had the exclusive world premiere look at the style guide sheets that were used in the production for the cartoon The Batman. These were given to the artists and animators on the series as a reference tool. We premiered these back in 2008.

The guide centers largely around Jeff Matsuda's desire to give Batman's cape a very specific life in the cartoon. The Batman style guides detail exactly how Batman's cape should be draw and draped in various scenarios.

"I've said it before and I'll say it again - your site is amazing! I check out your forums every chance I get to read what fans think of our shows. You're doing a hell of a job for the Batman fans!"

Okay, so if you're familiar with Josh Gad at all you know he's a little bit of a nerd. No, wait he's a HUGE nerd and a major Batman fan to boot. We mean that as a complete compliment, of course. Gad has been rumored to be swarming around the role of Penguin for awhile now, but his latest Tweet directed at Hamm made us geek out.
