Evening Primrose DVD Review

Evening Primrose DVD Review

Synopsis: The people are gone. The doors are locked. Darkness descends inside a department store. Fleeing the pressures of the outside world, an unhappy poet is at last alone. But not quite. In his newfound sanctuary, he comes across a group of hermits who have been hiding there for years. Among them is a young girl with whom he falls in love.

Created especially for television, Evening Primrose aired only once on ABC Stage 67. Starring Anthony Perkins and Charmian Carr, the production featured a teleplay adapted by James Goldman (from a short story by John Collier) and a score that included some of Stephen Sondheim’s most hauntingly beautiful songs – among them “If You Find Me, I’m Here” and “Take Me to the World”.

This long-lost treasure is now available for the first time ever – impeccably restored and re-mastered from a pristine kinescope print.

Review: One thing that I love about DVD is that they can dig up things that you would’ve never otherwise seen and release them for us.  This film was made direct for television and aired only once back in the 1960s.  Now, this is before my time, so I never had the opportunity to see it…until now.

This film is and eerie and hauntingly beautiful work featuring Anthony Perkins and music by the great Stephen Sondheim!  Its dark and unique and an absolute gem.  You absolutely must own this film.

The special features on this DVD include Newly recorded video interview with director Paul Bogart Newly, recorded audio interview with Chamian Carr. Full color test footage with Anthony Perkins. Booklet with written contributions by Stephen Sondheim and Jane Klain of the Paley Center for Media.

Ricardo discovers that this aging recluse has a secret a secret that could solve all of Ricardo's problems. With his boss closing in, and Margo and Lattie on the ropes, Ricardo is forced to choose between saving himself, and saving his only friends.

Review: We really enjoy independent films here at the Legion.  We watch a ton of them and after awhile, even they start to blend together.  One that has recently stood out to us that we’d like to give mention to is Harrison Montgomery.  This story is truly heartwarming in a real-world type of way.  It explores the human connection, lonliness, abuse and has a dramatic flare and a heart-felt emotion attached to it that we rarely see come across well on-screen.  Kudos to this film and we definitely recommend that you check it out.

The Six Wives of Henry Lefay DVD Review

The Six Wives of Henry Lefay DVD Review

Synopsis: After Henry Lefay is presumed dead, his daughter Barbara is left to make the funeral arrangements. But when his current wife and five exes wage a fierce power struggle over the burial, Barbara is hilariously caught in the middle. Starring Tim Allen, Elisha Cuthbert, Andie MacDowell, Jenna Elfman, and Chris Klein.

Review: Tim Allen is a great comedian.  I grew up watching his filthy stand-up routine and then saw him transition into family man in the Home Improvement series.  I’ve always enjoyed his feature films, he’s a likable guy.  Earlier this year we reviewed his very unknown film “Crazy on the Outside”.  Now, we’re checking out his latest feature “ The Six Wives of Henry Lefay”.

This movie is crazy!  Allen plays Henry, a man who basically marries every young girl he can find, much to the chagrin of his daughter, Barbie.  Barbie is our main character in the film and as her father dies, she tries to arrange a funeral, but the ex’s all show-up and insanity ensues.

This movie is funny, charming and very sexually charged.  It’s a great adult comedy.

The Addams Family Cartoon: The Complete Series DVD Review

The Addams Family Cartoon: The Complete Series DVD Review

Synopsis: Be delightfully miserable with the Addams Family as they take to the road in their Victorian-styled RV for spooktacular cross-country quests only they can conjure. From Nashville to New Orleans, New Mexico and Hawaii, these peculiar parents – Gomez and Morticia – treat their family to misadventures, including outwitting a band of gold thieves, freeing the animals from New York’s Central Park Zoo and racing a horse in the Kentucky Derby. They even win a piece of the moon and with Uncle Fester’s rocket, the trip will be a blast! You may remember them as “altogether ooky,” but the spirit of this family is contagious! Scream with joy over this 4-Disc, 16-Episode The Addams Family: Season 1!

Review: The Addams Family made their first appearance in animation format on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon Scooby-Doo.  The gang met the Addams Family and it was so popular that Hanna-Barbera developed a series just for the family.  It debuted in the early 1970s with a Scooby-Doo style sense of humor and went for just one season.   This new four-disc DVD set collects the entire original series, not to be confused with the later 1990s animated series.

The 1970s show consisted of the Addams Family traveling around the country in an RV styled after their Victorian home.  It was quite a sight.  The show is basically one comedy bit after another as the family gets in silly situations with normal people.  The show includes a laugh track and the animation style of the old Scooby-Doo show.  Its really fun to watch, and as a huge Addams Family fan, I'm so happy to have it in our DVD library.

Legends of the Super Heroes DVD Review

Legends of the Super Heroes DVD Review
courtesy of our network site www.DVDLegion.com

Starring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin

Available for the FIRST TIME EVER ON DVD, exclusively from the WarnerArchive.com: http://bit.ly/WAC_SuperHeroes

Synopsis: Heroes and villains of DC Comics square off in the two-part, live-action, made-for-TV (with a laugh track!) smackdowns of Legends of the Super Heroes. The Challenge: Batman and Robin (Adam West and Burt Ward of the live-action Batman TV series) lead The Flash, Green Lantern and more JLA members against The Riddler (Frank Gorshin reprising his TV role), Mordru, Weather Wizard and other Doom-dealers. The Legion’s ultimate gambit: trick the heroes into downing a diabolical depowering drink! The Roast: Poking fun beats swapping punches when celebrity host Ed McMahon emcees a rowdy rave-up. Who knew DC Super Heroes and villains packed as much verbal wit as physical grit when not locked in mortal combat? These Legends will leave you laughing.

Review: I was well aware of the old CBS special two-part Legends of the Super Heroes.  Its legendary in fan circles as one of the worst, most campy superhero features of all-time!   I had never actually sat down to watch it though, until it came out on DVD now from the Warner Archive.  I sat with the family and watched in horror as my favorite super heroes were prancing around the screen like lunatics.  This special is not funny...its hilarious!  You have to understand, of course, that it was meant as a parody to begin with.  There is some great jokes and moments that made us laugh out loud...as well as groan.  Half of the costumes are good.  You get Adam West, Burt Ward and Frank Gorshin re-visiting their roles from the 1966 Batman tv show.  Honestly, this special makes that show look like a serious drama!

Overall, this is a great piece of superhero history and definately something any collector should own.  I never thought we'd get an official DVD release of this one, but I'm sure glad that we got to see it in all of it's ....I should say glory, but shame is probably a better term! lol.

Los Angeles Lakers: 2010 NBA Finals Series Blu-Ray Review

Los Angeles Lakers: 2010 NBA Finals Series Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: A rivalry renewed and a hotly anticipated rematch two years in the making! The 2010 NBA Finals exceeded the hype as the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics, the two most successful franchises in NBA history, picked up where they left off in 2008 when the Celtics defeated the Lakers to earn the title. The Lakers, led by 2010 Finals MVP Kobe Bryant, took the series to Game Seven and, down by 13 points in the third quarter, came back to repeat as champions in the most-watched NBA game in over a decade. Relive the dramatic setbacks, comebacks, and late-game heroics of this epic series. This definitive box set contains all seven games in their entirety, with exclusive bonus features that are your all-access pass to both teams on the court and in the locker room.

Review: If you’re a fan of the LA Lakers, then you know that the 2009-2010 team is now the thing of legends in the history of basketball!  Fans of the Lakers are hardcore, with merchandise and collectibles.  Now, the ultimate blu-ray set to commemorate the winning season for the Lakers is available and I don’t think it could be any more complete.

This blu-ray set is unbelievable.  Not only does it feature all thrilling and tense games between LA and Boston, but it gives a TON of behind the scenes features, interviews, press conferences..everything a superfan could ever want from this experience.  Often times these so-called commemorative sets fall short.  This is NOT one of those occations.  This one rocks!  And in high-definition?  Doesn’t get better than that sports fans!

Lisa Lampanelli Chocolate, Please Book Review

About the Book: An inside look at the life of Comedy's Lovable Queen of Mean, Lisa Lampanelli, as she dishes on everything from relationships, food, and fat to why once you go black, you never go back
In her jaw-droppingly hilarious and politically incorrect memoir, Lisa reveals all—including the dysfunctional childhood that made her the insult comic she is today, the subject for which she's best known (black men, black men, and more black men), and her hilarious struggles with her addiction to food and hot guys. By telling her story in her very real, very candid, very open way, Lisa shows her audience that it's okay to be yourself, even if it's just one rehab stint at a time. Lisa also takes readers behind the scenes at the roasts that have marked her comedy career and launched her into the comedy elite, and reveals the important "firsts" in her career, including her first time on her hero's program, The Howard Stern Show.

Chocolate, Please is a side-splittingly funny portrait of the woman behind the award-winning insult comedy

Our Take: Who doesn't love Lisa Lampanelli? She is without a doubt in the list of top five comics in the business right now.  You've seen her on the Comedy Central Roasts and heard her on Howard Stern.  She's always funny...always mean and never fails to deliver!  My wife and I saw her recently at a house show, she killed.  It was amazing.  Her delivery is flawless and her insults fly off her tongue with grace and elegance.

Lisa's book, Chocolate, Please, is now on paperback, so we thought we'd give it a read.  Her stories are hilarious, maybe even funnier than her insults that she is so famous for.    Lisa's take on life and love is not only insightful, but its beyond funny.  You'll laugh....and well, you'll laugh.  This book is a keeper and would make an ideal Xmas gift.

Lisa Lampanelli's Rules to Live By

Husbands and Other Useless Entities in the Delivery Room
Recently, it has become popular to turn the delivery room into a cocktail party with guests enjoying snacks and breezy conversation while Mom is getting tortured. They think it’s going to be fun to watch until they spend some time there. Every type of bodily function is on display and coming at you in 3-D. It’s like a Gallagher concert, except it’s entertaining.

Passing Down the Family Name
People feel the need to pass on their entire name to their offspring, as if the last name ain’t bad enough. Why give the kid both names? It’s a well-known fact that nobody likes sequels.

Family Trees/Genealogy
Family trees only matter if you’re betting on a horse or want to be a made member of the mob. Everyone’s family tree starts with a monkey and ends in disappointment.

Sibling Rivalry
Sibling rivalry is the oldest psychological affliction known to man. It’s the reason Cain killed Abel. Their mom, Eve, liked Abel more.

Italian Families vs. Normal Families
Italian families are different from normal families. And by “normal,” I mean WASP families. There are many reasons for these differences. The first is volume. Italians whispering is screaming to a WASP.

Family Vacations
The term “family vacation” is an oxymoron. If you’re stuck with your family, it ain’t no vacation. We should call family vacations what they are: “Countdown to Dad’s public tantrum.”

Interventions
Interventions are a great way to lose a friend. That is because people don’t want to hear the truth about themselves. Addicts know they have a problem. Interventions are as bad as telling someone her boyfriend is cheating on her. Let her find out on her own. Remember: They always shoot the messenger.

Texting While on Dates
Texting on a date is completely inappropriate unless it’s a blind date, and by “blind date,” I mean the other person is blind. What could be more important on a date with me than me?

Star Wars Art: Visions Book Review

About the Book: When Star Wars debuted in 1977, it revolutionized mainstream American filmmaking, transporting fans to new galaxies and introducing them to countless now-classic characters, aliens, planets, and starships. In the decades since, the Star Wars Saga has become a phenomenon impacting cultures across the globe.

Just as George Lucas drew upon the work of N. C. Wyeth and Norman Rockwell for his own visual inspiration, he has now invited more than 100 well-known and promising artists to draw upon the entire Star Wars galaxy for inspiration. Star Wars: Visions collects these magnificent artworks for the first time. Featuring pieces by renowned artists such as Amano, Allan R. Banks, Harley Brown, Gary Carter, James Christensen, Michael Coleman, Kinuko Craft, Jim Dietz, Phillipe Druillet, Donato Giancola, Ann Hanson, H. R. Giger, Daniel Greene, Ron Kleeman, Arantzazu Martinez, Syd Mead, Moebius, Paul Oxborough, Alex Ross, Anthony J. Ryder, Dolfi Stoki, William Stout, Dan Thompson, Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo, Scott Waddell, and Jamie Wyeth, Star Wars: Visions is a breakthrough tribute to the worldwide inspiration that is Star Wars.

Our Take: We love Star Wars here at the Legion and we also love art books.  What happens when the two merge?  A fantastic new title Star Wars Art: Visions!  There is a TON of Star Wars art out there, but this book collects some of the most interesting pieces into one nice hardcover edition.

The pieces range from the absurd and odd to the action-packed and stunning.  There is everything from parody to serious tribute in this book and its all good.  Star Wars is an amazing franchise and books like these really show what a force (no pun intended) it is on pop culture still in the 21st Century!

This book is highly recommended for ANY Star Wars fan...you won't be disappointed.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY’S EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK AT CAPTAIN AMERICA!

Chris Evans a.k.a. Steve Rogers Reports For Duty

New York, N.Y. – Chris Evans is squirming. It’s a brisk October morning on the London set of Captain America: The First Avenger, and the 29-year-old actor is decked head to toe in the red, white, and blue threads of the titular Marvel Comics super-soldier, hanging from wires as a massive fan hammers him with wind. On “action,” Evans drops onto a black train car. At “cut,” the star hops up with a wince and wiggles his caboose. It seems the wire harness hidden in his trousers isn’t being kind to him. “There was a lot of business getting choked down there,” Evans later says with a smile, during a break in filming. His wirework appeared flawless, but a stumble on the first take has left him feeling self-conscious. “I almost fell off the train! That would have been a disaster,” says Evans. “Did everything else look good?”

He’s being a bit hard on himself, although Marvel Studios is surely grateful for Evans’ dedication to getting it right. Captain America—due July 22, about three months after the company’s other major 2011 release, Thor—isn’t just another new-model masked marvel from the superhero-movie factory that gave us Iron Man, X-Men, and Spider-Man. According to Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, Captain America is “the last jewel in the Marvel crown that hasn’t gotten its own movie franchise.” The estimated $140 million action-adventure must also creatively pave the way for the company’s most ambitious opus yet: The Avengers, a team-up of Marvel’s various movie icons slated for 2012. To paraphrase The Avengers’ fabled motto: Corporate Synergy Assemble!

Playing Captain America may seem like a glorious mission for most actors. But Chris Evans initially wanted no part of the movie—and Marvel initially wanted no part of Chris Evans. The studio tested a number of actors for the role, reportedly including Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe), John Krasinski (The Office), and Ryan Phillippe (Crash). Feige says Evans wasn’t on the original wish list, mostly because he had already served a tour of duty in Marvel’s cinematic army as Johnny Storm, a.k.a. the Human Torch, in Fox’s Fantastic Four movies. But as the studio began broadening its search, Evans emerged as a leading candidate. Feige credits the change of heart to the actor’s performances in several little seen dramas (including the 2007 sci-fi flick Sunshine) and a strong endorsement from Edgar Wright, who directed Evans in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. He also met an essential requirement: “We wanted an American,” says Feige.
Yet Evans says he turned down the role at least three times. He worried that audiences wouldn’t accept him as another superhero. He worried that Marvel’s request for a nine-movie commitment—a Captain America trilogy, an Avengers trilogy, and appearances in three more Marvel movies to be named later—would leave little time for other things, He worried about what would happen to his career if the movie flopped. “I’ve made some spotty films in the past, and I didn’t want another one on this scale,” says Evans, who most recently appeared in two franchise nonstarters, The Losers and Push. At the same time, he worried about the cost of fame if the film succeeded. (“I remember telling a buddy of mine, ‘If the movie bombs, I’m f---ed. If the movie hits, I’m f---ed!’ ”) Even after he succumbed to Feige’s repeated pleas to take a meeting at Marvel HQ—and even after leaving that meeting intrigued and moved by Captain America’s character arc and dazzled by Johnston’s plans and designs— Evans was wary, but he really didn’t know why. And then it hit him. “I was just scared,” he says. “I realized my whole decision-making process was fear-based, and you never want to make a decision out of fear. And so one weekend, I just said, ‘F---it. Let’s do it.’ ” (It helped that Marvel agreed to settle on a six-picture deal.) Feige says he was actually impressed by Evans’ reluctance; he believed it reflected a maturity befitting Steve Rogers. Adds Johnston, “He has really brought a whole different level to the character that I didn’t know existed—more real, more complicated, more vulnerable.”

Evans began prepping for the role by doing what anyone would do in his situation: He went online and read what the fans thought of his casting. The takeaway: He needed bigger muscles. So he worked with a personal trainer to pump his biceps and tone his abs, all of which are on full display during the Project: Rebirth sequence. (In order to show Steve Rogers as a scrawny runt, Johnston plans to use a combination of clever camera angles, costume trickery, and special effects that will digitally reduce Evans’ body or even put his face on a skinny actor.)

The meatiest issue facing Captain America is the politics. Marvel began the project keenly aware that a movie about a star-spangled super soldier named Captain America could be a tough sell to a politically divided nation and international audiences with a dim view of America’s current role in world affairs. Indeed, Feige indicates that Captain America: The First Avenger may be released in some foreign territories as just The First Avenger. Still, says Johnston, “I never wanted to make this movie into something of a flag-waver. We were very careful about that when we were developing the screenplay.” Marvel initially wanted a movie that toggled between past and present, but ultimately opted to set the story exclusively during WWII because the back-and-forth approach didn’t work for an origin story— and because WWII has exactly zero moral ambiguity. Johnston says he also wanted a movie “about international cooperation.” To that end, the film makes Captain America the leader of a team of elite soldiers from various countries, known in the comic books as the Howling Commandos. “It’s not about running from [political interpretations] or being afraid of saying anything, but just staying true to what the story has always been,” says Broussard. “I welcome whatever kind of healthy debate comes from it.”

Even more welcome for Marvel would be a movie that leaves audiences wanting to sign up immediately for The Avengers, which should be well into production under writer-director Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) by the time Captain America opens in July. Joining Evans in the cast will be Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye). Captain America: The First Avenger will set up the film’s premise—and bring Captain America into the present—with a prologue and epilogue that work the frozen-in-ice angle that Marvel used to revive the Captain America comic-book franchise in 1964. For all his early apprehensions, Evans now has no regrets about committing to a role that could dominate his Hollywood life until his 40th birthday. “When I first put on the suit, I was absolutely terrified. But once I started working, I could just see this was going to be a good experience. Then I started going, ‘Wow. This is really cool,’ ” he says. “I can’t believe I was almost too chicken to play Captain America.”
