| "Thank you to the Legions of Gotham post-ers, and I hope you enjoy the show and look forward to your reactions." --James Tucker, Supervising Producer & Lead Character Designer for Brave & the Bold |
![]() |
| Welcome to our EXCLUSIVE interview with Michael Jelenic. Michael is the Story Editor for the upcoming Batman: The Brave and the Bold Cartoon. Michael was kind enough to take some time out of his busy schedule to chat with Legions of Gotham regarding this new show.... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOG: You worked for a time on "The Batman" during what was arguably one of the best eras for that show. Did you enjoy your time on the show? Did any of that experience prepare you for the new gig on Brave and the Bold? MICHAEL JELENIC: My time on "The Batman" was a great learning experience for me and a lot of fun. I was able to work my way up from writer to being the story editor on season four. That show prepared me for The Brave and the Bold because it allowed me to address the grim and gritty stories first. I think whenever you work with Batman your instinct is to play up the darker elements of his mythos, but since both James Tucker and I had already done darker incarnations of the character, it gave us the freedom to try something different. LOG: You're the story editor for the new Batman: the Brave and the Bold cartoon. Can you please tell our readers what your job actually consists of? MJ: I’m in charge of the all script related aspects of the show. This entails working with the writers to develop stories and ensuring that the show has a consistent voice from episode to episode. The scripts from the writers have been great this season making my job a lot easier LOG: Did you conduct any research into vintage Batman comics and storylines for the show, or is a lot of what is done based on your own memory and imagination? MJ: Producer James Tucker is our resource when it comes to those vintage Batman comics. His knowledge is incredible and we can thank him for rediscovering the obscure characters that will be showing up throughout the series. The storylines are original, but we focus on evoking the feel of those older comics while staying true to the mythology LOG: What can fans and parents expect from the Brave and the Bold cartoon? What kind of Batman universe are we getting here? MJ: In this series, we are going to see Batman in a world that is far more varied than we're used to. Batman will interact with multiple characters in a variety of different environments. The episodes can be deep in space or undersea, different eras – wherever the story takes us. While the emphasis is on fun and adventure, "the meat" of the series will be Batman's different relationships with each of his partners LOG: Can you tell us a little bit about the show's structure? Are we getting all heroes fight the villain and wrap things up in one episode storylines? MJ: The structure of our show is unique. Each episode has a teaser that’s unrelated to the rest of the shows storyline. This gives us a chance to see twice as many heroes and villains than we would otherwise. The episodes themselves are designed to stand alone. We currently are not writing to support multiple episodic continuing story arcs. The characters, however, do grow and change from episode to episode. LOG: Are there any characters that you didn't get to utilize in season one that you're hoping to incorporate, should there be a season two? Can you let us in on any dish on what characters we can expect to see that haven't been announced? MJ: There were a couple characters we weren't able to use, but for the most part, we've been lucky enough to have access to an incredible range of heroes and villains. As far as other characters, we can expect to show up... maybe they will let me give away that Gorilla Grod and Gentleman Ghost will appear LOG: Do you have anything you'd like to say to the parents, fans and readers at LegionsofGotham .org regarding the new show? MJ: James and his crew really deserve a lot of credit coming up with a look that stands apart from anything out there. It's one of the best looking animated shows I've ever seen. I also think we've created a show that plays equally well for kids or adults, making this a Batman series that the whole family will be able to enjoy together. Michael, and many others, will be watching your reactions, so be sure to join our message board and post your thoughts on the new show as its aired!
